Al’s father has been in jail for the past 20 years, and his mother died of breast cancer when he was seven years old. Al and his siblings moved from home to home over the next nine years. Despite the difficulty in finding a quiet place to study, Al was determined to maintain his honor roll status. His efforts paid off and in 2006, Al attended the Stanford Medical Youth Science Program where he graduated at the top of the class. He will be the first in his family to attend college where he hopes to pursue a degree in Engineering.
