Alvin Somwaru

Alvin immigrated to the US with his mom and brother at age 13. Life in Guyana was very difficult. His childhood was defined by poverty and violence and he would frequently skip class and participate in street gangs. By the time Alvin came to the US, he could barely read or write. Thanks to the help of his aunt and uncle, teachers, and Summer Search, Alvin is now determined to finish high school and go to college. He hopes to attend San Francisco State University in the fall.
