Giovanni Mata has always been the man of the house. All his life, his father has been in prison. At times, Gio's mother worked three jobs to support his family. As soon as he could, Gio got a job to help his mom.

He has also been a father to his little brother. Gio gives him an allowance and helps him with his homework. While playing dad and financial supporter, Gio remains an honor student at East Side College Preparatory School in East Palo Alto. He will attend Santa Clara University in the fall.
