Jose Taylor shares a bond with his brother and sister that no one can break. As a toddler, he and his siblings witnessed their mother's murder and they were placed under their grandmother]s care. She was alcoholic and abusive and targeted Jose the most. On a particularly bad night, his older sister Kimberly told Jose and their younger brother to pack their things.

They left their grandmother's home and began living with an aunt. After Kimberly left for college, the abuse started again until Jose had enough. It was his turn to tell his brother to pack and with the help of a mentor, they both left their aunt's home for a better life.

This fall he will attend Manhattanville College in New York.
