Maya Barnes

Maya was named after Maya Angelou, whose persistence, determination, and intelligence have served as an inspiration to Maya. Maya and her brother were placed into foster care nine years ago when her parents could no longer take care of them. Growing up they were often evicted and when the bills could no longer be paid there was no water, no lights, nor food. Maya is currently senior class President, tutors after school at her local church, and is a recreational leader at a nearby elementary school. She plans to pursue a Masters in Social Welfare to make a difference in the lives of foster care children. Maya will attend CSU Northridge in the fall.
