Money was always a challenge for Mayra and her family. With her single mom working seven days a week to keep the family afloat, at one point Mayra and her mom shared a two-bedroom apartment with seven strangers. During the toughest times, Mayra’s mom was not always able to provide the loving support Mayra needed. Mayra found comfort in school and in religion. Today, she is determined to get good grades to achieve her dream of going to college. Last year she was the captain of the JV soccer team and is currently the Treasurer for the Latino Student Union. Mayra hopes that by getting a college education, she will be able to support her family in the future. Mayra will attend UC San Diego.
