Born in Brazil, Mayra moved over 17 times and attended seven different schools by the time she was 16. When her stepfather brought her, and her mother and brother to the U. S., she looked forward to achieving her dreams. Once they arrived in the U. S., however, life with her stepfather became increasingly unsafe and, once again, she had to move. Today, Mayra balances school with babysitting and participating in her school's Dance Club. Inspired by her mother's goal of giving her children a better life in the U.S., Mayra works hard to get good grades in order to earn what her mother never did -- a college education. Mayra has applied to Brigham Young University Idaho.
