Mayra Vega and her mother have always been a team. As a young girl, she lived with an alcoholic step-father who abused Mayra's mother. At the age of ten, she began photographing her mother's bruises in case her mother needed to report her step-father.

That never happened and her mother got a divorce. Her mother now works two jobs to help Mayra prepare for college. Mayra will attend Wesleyan College in Connecticut.
