Souly promised her mom she would go to college, and judging from her 4.23 GPA, that’s precisely where she’s headed. However, life has been hard for this Laotian girl and her family. Her mom was diagnosed with cancer when Souly was just 13, and her father abandoned the family. Souly’s mom passed away a couple of years ago, but Souly and her two sisters have held onto each other. She wants to go to college to make her parents proud, and to help support her sisters. She will attend UC Berkeley in the fall.
