Tina Chau

Wallenberg High School '98, San Francisco
University of California-Berkeley '02

We first met Tina when she was a senior at Wallanberg High school in San Francisco with a perfect 4.0. But it hasn't been easy for Tina. Her immigrant parents came to America to seek a better life. Her father died when Tina was 10, leaving her mother to support the family on the small wages of a garment worker. She is paid by the piece, working six days a week, from morning until night.

Because her mother speaks no English, Tina runs the house, and pays the bills and works part-time. Tina sees her education as a better life for her family. Tina graduated from UC-Berkeley this year in American Studies and worked as a Production Assistant at KRON-TV before moving first to Saipan and then to Hawaii as a television reporter.
